"Assignment of Tasks on Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems"
Distributed computing offers a solution where a network of heterogeneous computers, referred to distributed system, can be used to solve large scale scientific and engineering problems. A parallel application could be divided into a number of tasks and executed concurrently on different computers in the distributed system. In theory, this approach can improve the performance since each task can be executed on an architecture that is best suited for it. In reality, however, exploiting the full potential of the system requires efficient allocation of the tasks comprising the application onto the available computers in the system, referred to as the task assignment problem. If the assignment is not carefully implemented, the performance of the system may suffer.
